In the same year Thomas Jefferson was elected to Virginia's House of Burgesses, beginning a political career that was eventually to  carry him to the Presidency. Here he became an intimate of Patrick Henry, and it  was at this time the he wrote "A summary View of the Rights of British America." which  was to become a cornerstone of the ideals of the American Revolution.   Though well-know as a writer, Thomas Jefferson had a reputation as a poor speaker. So even as he came to be know as "the silent member" of the House of  Burgesses, and of both the First and Second Continental Congresses, his outspokenness and decisive actions in committees was legendary, especially in matters of colonial rights and independence.
