The making of the interactive Barney, Codenamed Gepetto for the motion
technology inside the dolls, the Actimates toys were Microsoft's attempt
to get into the toy market. The first of these dolls, modeled after
Barney, was first sold in 1997, becoming a success that holiday season.
Dolls based on Arthur, his sister D.W., and the Teletubbies (all four of
them including Tinky-Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa, and Po) were also made. The
dolls were discontinued in 2000 and Microsoft lost the patent rights to
the toys not too long afterwards ... Big Bird StoryMagic was a set of
books, tapes and animated dolls created by Ideal Toys in 1986. Caroll
Spinney and Frank Oz recorded the voices of Big Bird, Oscar the Grouch
and Cookie Monster, reading a set of Sesame Street storybooks. The Big
Bird StoryMagic doll had a tape player in his back; when one of the
tapes was played inside him, his eyes and beak would move, as if he were
telling the story. Animated Oscar and Cookie Monster dolls were sold
separately; they would only work when plugged into the Big Bird doll.
Oscar featured an animated mouth, and could withdraw into his trash can,
while Cookie Monster had googly eyes. Some of the StoryMagic books were
adaptations of previously released storybooks; others were original to

Big Bird Can Share, 1985, Big Bird StoryMagic, ... Big Bird Can Share is
a 1985 Sesame Street storybook featuring Big Bird. Big Bird wakes
early, and sees a brand-new pail and shovel on his mailbox. He's puzzled
by the tag, which reads "Dear Big Bird, I think you'll know what to do
with this! Love, Granny Bird."
Big Bird walks down the street with his gift, and is interrupted by
Oscar the Grouch and his worm Slimey, who want to dig for worms. He
decides not to share with them. He meets Ernie and Bert at a Figgy Fizz
pop machine, with a aluminum can of bottle caps; Bert asks to use the
pail to carry the rest of the caps. Big Bird hesitates, and Bert says,
"Never mind. I'll bet you're going to make a sand castle in the sandbox.
We'll see it later."
Big Bird walks away puzzled at how someone would make a sand castle. He
sits in the sandbox, and pours three rather shapeless piles of sand.
Grover notices, and tells an apprehensive Big Bird that he'll take the
pail to the fountain, to fill it with water. Betty Lou overhears, and
offers to share her watering can, with which she has been watering the
wildflowers in the park. With the success of their efforts, Big Bird
calls out to his friends. Cookie Monster comes over with a ream of
popsicle sticks, Prairie Dawn with an armful of pebbles. Soon, Herry
Monster (and a toy car), the Two-Headed Monster (with some green and red
striped cans), and the Honkers (with twigs) come over to help. Ernie
and Bert eventually approach, having found a bag for the extra bottle
caps, which are used to decorate the turrets. Upon finishing the moated,
fortified city, Big Bird exclaims "This is what Granny Bird meant!"

toy set. It all began one afternoon when Big Bird met Cookie Monster on
his way home from a shopping trip to Hooper's Store. He was carrying a
grocery bag full of cookies. "These cookies for dinner tonight", he told
Big Bird. "Me going to have coconut macaroons, marshmallow puffs with
strawberry icing, and gingerbread for dessert." "That sounds nice,
Cookie Monster." "That sound delicious! Oh, me can hardly wait. Uh-Oh.
Me afraid me no can wait. Me afraid me going to eat cookies now! Then me
not have them for dinner. Here, Big Bird. Me get cookies for me till
dinnertime. Quick. Before it too late", he said. "Oh no", Big Bird said.
"I know what we'll happen. You change your mind it tend to be all
afternoon trying to get some back again".
Well, Cookie Monster asked him again and again to eat his cookies. But
just as Big Bird was about to give in, Oscar popped up and said "I'll
keep your cookies for you". "Really, Oscar? You do that for Cookie
Monster?" "Why not? It'll be a pleasure", said Oscar. "Oh, good. Now
cookies stay safe", said Cookie Monster giving Oscar the paper bag. "See
you at dinnertime. Bye-bye!" And off he ran. "Oscar", Big Bird said,
"don't you know Cookie Monster will try to give you to give him the
cookies before dinnertime?" "Of course I know that", said Oscar. "And I
love saying no". That's what Big Bird knew it was going to be an
interesting afternoon. Cookie Monster buys some cookies for dinner, but
starts craving them earlier, & asks Big Bird to hold them for him
until Dinner. Big Bird refuses, because he knows that Cookie Monster
will keep begging & trying to trick him into giving them to him
until he gives in. Oscar The Grouch eventually agrees to hold them,
telling BIG BIRD that he LOVES to say "NO". Cookie Monster tries to
trick Oscar with a variety of disguises, but Oscar doesn’t fall for any
of them.
Frank Oz recorded the voice of Cookie Monster, & Caroll Spinney the
voices of Big Bird & Oscar The Grouch, for the accompanying cassette

the book, Big Bird is charged with solving a mystery: Cookie Monster
claims that somebody stole his brand new box of cupcakes, and Oscar has
the empty box in his can. Big Bird is so confident that he can get to
the bottom of it, that he promises to buy Cookie a new box if he can't
find them. In the end, it is left to the listener to conclude that
Cookie Monster ate them all himself! Big Bird never quite gets to this
conclusion. It is a classic example of empowering the kids by letting
them feel just a little bit smarter than the characters ... Caroll
Spinney recorded the voices of Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch, and Frank
Oz the voice of Cookie Monster, for the accompanying cassette tape.
